Iris 'Silver Moon' Click here to visit our Main Plant List page for current availability of this plant common name: Pacific Coast iris flowering season: midspring height: 6 to 8 inches Light requirements: sun, afternoon shade where summers are especially hot Soil requirements: average Water requirments: average Growth habit: grows as a slowly expanding clump How to propagate: dividing in fall Leaf type: upright narrow blades of green Ways to use it: either in a garden bed or naturalized in the wild landscape Special characteristics: being native to places where summers are very dry, it survives well without irrigation once it is established Other points of interests: although it cannot withstand severe winter cold, this is not a delicate plant that needs to be pampered 'Silver Moon' has ruffly flowers of cream to a very delicate lilac, blushed a bit darker towards the inner part of the petals. This is a hybrid of irises that are native to the coast of North America along the Pacific Ocean. It thrives where winters are mild. So this is not a good choice for gardeners everywhere. But for the West Coast where summers are bone-dry, this is an excellent iris to have. And we need more plants that are content with dry summers. It blooms in April into May at a height of about 8 inches. Near the ocean it can take full sun but away from the coast filtered shade is recommended. The plants we offer are potted and can be planted in spring or in fall. Hardy to 0°F. |
